According to the website of University of Maryland Medical Center, 15 percent of all pregnancies end in miscarriage, usually during the first trimester. The causes are chromosomal, hormonal and immunological. That's why consuming food rich in nutrients and vitamins is very important for pregnant women. However, there are certain foods you should avoid during the early stages of your pregnancy. During the first 3 months, you are concerned about what to avoid eating, and that's totally normal. You're new to this; you're bound to have questions. That's when you consult your doctor, who usually advises you not to take coffee, canned juices, unpasteurised milk, alcohol, processed foods, uncooked eggs and meat.
But the list does not stop there. You should also be careful about consuming.
1. Pineapple
We assume that we should eat lot of fruits during pregnancy, as they are a rich source of vitamins, but some fruits like pineapple should be avoided during the first trimester. Pineapple contains bromelain, which softens the uterus and causes contractions, which could lead to a miscarriage.
2. Papaya
Stay away from papaya - especially unripe, green papaya - as it contains latex, which also induces uterine contractions.
3. Sesame
Sesame seeds induce abortion by exciting the uterine muscles, which eventually leads to miscarriage during the first trimester.
4. Drumstick tree
This is an extremely nutritious food, but not for pregnant women at all because the drumstick tree contains alpha-sitosterol, which is a hormone effective in preventing pregnancy. This substance smooths out the uterine walls, which could lead to an abortion.
5. Sprouted potato
Sprouted potatoes are not only harmful for pregnant women. Everyone should avoid eating them because they contain harmful toxins. Solanin in sprouted potatoes will affect the growth of the foetus and cause a miscarriage. Also, stay away from processed foods that contain potatoes like chips, fries and burgers.
6. Green Tea
If you really like green tea, limit it to one cup per day, as a cup of green tea contains about 200mg of caffeine. If you consume more than this it may lead to a miscarriage.
7. Cheese
Avoid cheese or paneer prepared from unpasteurised milk. These contain some bacteria, which are harmful for the foetus.
Although these are rich sources of minerals and nutrients, pollutants in the water could make them cause developmental delays and brain damage in the foetus.
