Google tells Pixel XL owner: Buy another device

Image
We've been following the plight of Mark Buckman. He's the  Google Pixel XL  owner who has been producing videos of  the audio problem that has afflicted not one, not two, not three, not four but five Pixel XL units  that he has owned. According to Buckman (and from the evidence we have seen on video), the speaker on the Pixel XL tends to produce static and distorted sounds at high volume levels. Buckman also discovered that this is occurring on the smaller  Google Pixel  models as well. Yesterday, we told you that  Google had finally acknowledged the issue , which we hoped would lead to a software update containing a fix. Instead, Mr. Buckman was stunned when he read an email sent from the company. Google was offering him a refund with the return of his latest Pixel XL. By offering the refund, it would seem that Google doesn't feel confident that it will be able to deliver a Pixel XL without the sound issue. As we told you the other day, M...

Image
Above: Android 7.1.1 Nougat is rolling out now. Google today began sending out the next update to Android 7.0 Nougat: version 7.1.1. Developers have had access to a  preview  of this release for the past few weeks, and now anyone can download it without being part of the Android Beta Program — but only on a select few devices for now. The thing that’s interesting about this release of Android is that it lets more mobile devices take advantage of some of the fascinating features of Google’s own smartphones, the  Pixel and Pixel XL . For instance, now if you have one of the supported devices, you can try out the Moves set of features that were until this point exclusive to the Pixels. For one thing, when you pick up the device, it will show you your latest notifications, if you enable that feature. (Apple included a similar feature called Raise to Wake in  iOS 10 , but only some iOS devices support it.) You can also have your Android device open the C...

Pioneering nano technology captures energy from people

Image
This foldable keyboard, created by Michigan State University engineer Nelson Sepulveda and his research team, operates by touch; no battery is needed. Sepulveda developed a new way to harvest energy from human motion using a pioneering device called a biocompatible ferroelectret nanogenerator, or FENG. The day of charging cellphones with finger swipes and powering Bluetooth headsets simply by walking is now much closer. Michigan State University engineering researchers have created a new way to harvest energy from human motion, using a film-like device that actually can be folded to create more power. With the low-cost device, known as a nanogenerator, the scientists successfully operated an LCD touch screen, a bank of 20 LED lights and a flexible keyboard, all with a simple touching or pressing motion and without the aid of a battery. The groundbreaking findings, published in the journal Nano Energy, suggest "we're on the path toward wearable devices powered by h...

Meet Salto, the world's most vertically-agile robot.

Image
LOS ANGELES: Researchers have designed a small robot that can leap into the air and then spring off a wall, or perform multiple vertical jumps in a row, resulting in the highest robotic vertical jumping agility ever recorded. The agility of the robot opens new pathways of locomotion that were not previously attainable, said researchers who hope that one day this robot and other vertically agile robots can be used to jump around rubble in search and rescue missions. To build the robot, known as Salto (saltatorial locomotion on terrain obstacles), researchers at University of California - Berkeley in the US studied the animal kingdom's most vertically agile creature, the galago, which can jump five times in just four seconds to gain a combined height of 8.5 metres. The galago has a special ability to store energy in its tendons so that it can jump to heights not achievable by its muscles alone. Salto's robotic vertical jumping ag...
